Angie's story of 'honour based' abuse

Angie* first contacted Karma Nirvana (KN) aged 15. She was experiencing Honour Based Abuse from her family, including threats to kill, and was at risk of child marriage abroad. She told us she lacked trust in professionals and that she did not feel safe at home, fearing being killed. She asked KN to advocate on her behalf with social care.
KN agreed. The process was lengthy and involved many calls, emails, strategy meetings, and meetings with other professionals. Due to inadequate responses from social care, KN had to escalate her case several times.
After weeks of persistent advocacy, Angie was removed from home and placed in a safe, out-of-area foster placement. KN has continued to advocate for her since, as she has had to move multiple times for her safety.
We first supported Angie nearly three years ago and continue to do so through our helpline. She contacts us for emotional support as she navigates estrangement from her family, legal proceedings, and ongoing feelings of guilt and shame.
KN has become almost like a family to Angie. We're often the first people she updates with positive life events, such as her exam results. On multiple occasions, we have sent her gifts and cards to congratulate her on these important milestones.
A few weeks ago, Angie shared with us that without our helpline, she doesn't think she would still be here. Despite everything she has been through, she has now received a conditional offer to study at a prestigious university.
