Contacting the Irish Foster Care Association’s (IFCA’s) National Helpline Service

Here to listen

I first contacted the Irish Foster Care Association’s (IFCA’s) National Helpline Service around five years ago, as a foster carer calling to seek support to help keep my grandchild. I was fostering my grandchild from when they were a baby, and we had a very strong bond. At the time there were concerns from the social work team about my grandchild being with me because of my age. Someone I knew told me about the IFCA Helpline, and I rang to ask if I could get advice on my situation; I was very worried and upset about it. At first, I was reluctant as I thought IFCA was involved with the social workers, but my fears were lifted as when I called, I got reassurance that it was an independent and confidential helpline.

Through the National Helpline Service, I received an advocate who has given me great support over the past five years. Both the Helpline and Advocacy Services have completely transformed things in a good way; my grandchild is still with me to this day.

Before I called, I thought I would have to go down the legal route and didn’t know the helpline could give the advice and support they gave me. I have used IFCA’s National Helpline Service many times throughout the years to navigate difficult situations in foster care and calling for support to navigate many challenges, as things can run smoothly but if I run into something now, I know I can call the helpline anytime.
