We talked to our member, The Bank Workers Charity (BWC) to learn more about the organisation, what they do and the difference they have made to people’s lives.
What do BWC do?
BWC help current and former bank workers and their families in the UK. They provide advice, expert support, and in some cases, financial assistance. The charity is independent of banks and their services are free and confidential.
BWC will work with clients and tailor their service to their needs. They can help with a range of issues whether work or home-related, including:
Mental health - they can provide specialist support including counselling or other therapies.
Caring responsibilities - they can help carers find out how to access financial, legal and practical support.
Disability and long-term conditions - they offer personalised support and advice, referral to further specialist advice and local support organisations to help manage a disability or long-term health condition.
Legal advice – they can connect you with legal experts for a telephone consultation on home or work-related issues.
Debt and money management - they can provide debt management advice, check your benefits entitlements and help with money management.
How can BWC help?
A team of Client Advisers are available by phone or LiveChat, and they work with partners such as Insight Healthcare, Relate, Leonard Cheshire and the National Autistic Society to deliver specialist support to clients. In some cases, they are also able to provide financial assistance in the form of one-off grants. Some of the items they are able to pay for include things such as mobility aids and equipment, funeral expenses, respite breaks and care, furniture, or even general living expenses.
BWC in action - how we helped Zara
Zara is a current bank employee who experienced financial difficulties after separating from the father of her son. Finding it hard to meet living costs, Zara fell into arrears with her council tax. Unable to register for a council property until the arrears were cleared, she worried about how she would find an affordable home.
Feeling stressed and anxious about the situation, she got in touch with us to see how we could help. In addition to supporting Zara with managing her mental health and wellbeing, our Visiting Caseworkers advised that she could apply for a grant, which could help to settle her debt. Her application was successful and through the grant, she’s managed to clear her bills.
Zara can now register for a property with her local council and looks forward to finding a suitable place to live.
